THE YELL Sound ferry service has been reduced to a single vessel after the stand-in boat Fivla broke down on Tuesday morning. The relief vessel is standing in for the usual Yell ferry Dagalien, which is undergoing planned maintenance on her propulsion systems. The Fivla encountered problems earlier on Tuesday morning before the service resumed to a normal timetable, but the route was reduced.
Shetland Islands Council operate a fleet of 12 ferries providing lifeline services between mainland Shetland and the islands. The services run from 14 terminals serving 8 islands with a total population of just under 3,500 people. The ships make over 70,000 crossings each year and carry over 750,000 passengers and over 350,000 vehicles.

The shortest ferry route from the UK to Norway is DFDS Torlines from Immingham (Hull) to Brevik (Drammen) but it's primarily a freight service and timings are not at all convenient for tourists. The route with least driving is DFDS Harwich to Esbjerg (overnight), drive to the north of Denmark then ferry to Stavanger or Bergen (overnight), or fast ferry to Kristiansand (arriving very late).
The northern islands of Yell, Unst and Fetlar are reached via the roll-on-roll-off ferries that operate between Toft, near Mossbank on the Mainland, and Ulsta at the south west corner of Yell.
